I had a little stint for three years, while I was early in my career, where I did a ton of freelance work beyond the stuff I was doing at Nelvana. This included a weekly newspaper editorial cartoon. I lived in Georgetown at the time, so most of the drawings were dealing with local small-town stuff. Only once in a while would I get the opportunity to deal with anything international. The ideas were always given to me by the editor of the newspaper. On the rare occasion, I might slip in my own take on something. Eventually, I was squeezed out by the publisher because they could get their cartoons from a syndicate for free, thus saving themselves the hefty sum of $50.00 a week that I was charging.
I also did a bunch of freelance work for advertising agencies whose clients included Burger King, McDonalds, Nestles, Kellogg's, Ganz and Barbie. Sadly, most of this stuff I never kept any copies of.
